Global Wales
The Global Wales programme provides a strategic, collaborative approach to international higher education and further education in Wales.
The programme is a partnership between Universities Wales, ColegauCymru, Welsh Government, British Council Wales, and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales.
Global Wales brings together universities and colleges with Global Wales partner organisations behind a single strategy to increase international profile, recruitment, and partnership opportunities for universities and colleges for the benefit of students, institutions and Wales as a nation.
From 2022, Global Wales is funded through Taith - an ambitious international learning exchange programme announced by Welsh Government in 2021 and launched in early 2022.
Global Wales’ objectives 2022-2026 will be to:
-
increase student numbers from priority international markets
-
maintain and grow partnerships in priority international markets
-
generate additional export earnings for Wales from priority markets
-
increase the awareness and reputation of Welsh universities and further education colleges in priority markets.
Global Wales has four priority markets:
- Europe
- North America
- India
- Vietnam
Global Wales engages in ‘system to system’ development, leveraging all elements of the Welsh higher education and further education systems (government, regulator, sector) to respond quickly and innovatively to the requirements of partner countries.
This work is reinforced by market development activities, ranging from recruitment and marketing using its Study in Wales brand, to capacity building projects, diplomatic delegations and visits, as well as a range of scholarships, including the flagship Global Wales Scholarship programme.
Global Wales Board
The Global Wales Board provides strategic direction to the Global Wales project, and is comprised of senior representatives from each of the Global Wales partner organisations (Universities Wales, Colleges Wales, Welsh Government, HEFCW, and British Council Wales).
Taith
The £65m programme has been set up to fund the inward and outward mobility of students and staff from across universities, further education and vocational education and training, adult education, youth work settings, and schools.
There is a clear intersection between Global Wales' objectives and the goals of Taith around providing international opportunities for learners, supporting international partnerships and raising Wales’ international profile.
