Funding of up to £20,000 per project is available through Global Wales’ HEFCW-funded programme, to support academic partnership building activity between Welsh and Ukrainian institutions.

This builds on previous funding provided by Global Wales to support partnerships brought together through a UK-wide twinning scheme with Ukrainian universities. The scheme has been set up to support Ukrainian universities, staff and students whose day-to-day operations have been disrupted by conflict in Ukraine.

The twinning scheme is coordinated by Cormack Consultancy Group (CCG) with the support of Universities UK International (UUKi), drawing on each group’s expertise in the needs of Ukrainian institutions and the international outreach activities of UK universities.

Welsh universities participating in the scheme to date include Wrexham Glyndŵr University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Bangor University, Aberystwyth University, Swansea University, and Cardiff University, which also has a second partnership in place through its School of Medicine.

Partnerships supported through this latest round of Global Wales funding will likely, but not exclusively, be those established through the Charles Cormack twinning scheme.

Universities are invited to submit an Expression of Interest to the Global Wales team by Monday 3 April.

Professor Cara Aitchison, Chair of the Welsh Sector Group on Ukraine, said:

“I am pleased that Global Wales, through HEFCW, is providing funding to further support the building of partnerships between Welsh and Ukrainian universities.

These partnerships are a testament to the global communities we inhabit and our shared values of the pursuit of knowledge and ideas, and the role higher education plays across society.

“By providing support and resources we can ensure Ukraine’s universities not only survive but emerge stronger from the war, allowing them to play a critical role in post-war reconstruction.”
