'The Welsh Government has today published its statement of priorities for the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research which includes consideration of participation in education. With fewer Welsh 18-year-olds choosing to enter higher education, and participation challenges across the post-16 sector, it will be crucial that the Commission works to understand how to improve and support Welsh participation in education and training to secure opportunities for today's students and future generations.

'More broadly, the move to less bureaucracy and a risk-based system is welcome, especially given the significant financial challenges that higher education in Wales faces, not least due to significant inflationary pressures.

'We now look forward to working with the Commission in the development of their strategic plan, including making the case for the Commission's role in being an advocate for Welsh research and innovation within the UK.'
