After graduating, Mike worked as a research scientist for British Steel Corporation at Port Talbot, before becoming a senior lecturer, specialising in computing and information technology.

Mike has been involved in politics since 1995 when he was elected to represent Morriston on the City and County of Swansea Council. He is now a Welsh Labour politician and has been the Member of the Senedd for the constituency of Swansea East since 2011.

Mike says that his time at university opened lots of opportunities for him and enabled him to apply for more jobs.
