After experiencing trauma as an adult, Cathy received incredible support from services such as victim support. She wanted to give back and support others through similar experiences and so decided to study Criminology and Criminal Justice at Wrexham University.

Initially, Cathy struggled and felt out of her depth. However, with the support of tutors, academic services, and counselling she overcame the barriers, eventually going on to gain a first-class degree with honours. Following this, Cathy wasn’t ready for her educational journey to end and embarked on an MA in Criminology.

It was at this point that Cathy got involved with the Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experience (TrACE) project which opened up opportunities to educate others about trauma and its effects.

On completion of her MA, Cathy began studying for her Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) qualification to expand her knowledge further. As part of this she has secured a placement within the Criminology department at the University, where she delivers academic workshops and lectures.

Cathy also runs TrACE champion workshops for students to help develop an understanding of trauma and its widespread impact, and to promote a culture that embeds kindness, compassion, and respect into everyday practice.

Cathy is extremely proud of her educational journey so far, and she is currently considering completing a PhD when she finishes the PCET as she wants to help motivate and encourage others.

“If it wasn’t for education I would not have found my own purpose beyond being a mother, and a provider.”

“I have become much more confident in my life in every way. I feel that there is nothing you cannot achieve if you are passionate enough.”
