These stories offer a glimpse into the diverse experiences of learners from across Wales and underline the far-reaching benefits of a university education.

The publication forms part of the Transforming Lives campaign, which showcases real stories of students and graduates whose educational journeys have empowered them to overcome challenges, achieve their ambitions and transform their lives.

The collection was officially launched today at an event held at the Pierhead on the Senedd Estate to celebrate and showcase the inspirational individuals who have shared their stories with Universities Wales throughout the campaign.

Attendees at the event heard from two of the campaign participants – Antigone Cooper and Ryan Eddowes – who shared their personal journeys, outlining how their time at university has helped them to overcome adversity and follow their dreams.

  • Antigone Cooper took a slightly unusual route to her degree, having spent a major part of her teenage years in care. She is now using her experience of overcoming personal challenges to build a career in human resources.
“If you don’t go to university you can only get so far and, especially as a care leaver, you’re just a statistic most of the time.”
  • Ryan Eddowes was born with Bilateral Congenital Talipes Equinovarus, also known as ‘Clubfoot’. Studying Zoology at Bangor University enabled Ryan to pursue his passion for the natural world, travelling internationally to research and film wildlife.
“University for me is a pathway of self-discovery, fostering independence, cultivating unforgettable moments and creating lifelong stories to tell.”

Speaking at the event, Vikki Howells MS, the Minister for Further Education and Higher Education said:

“University can be a transformative time, opening up doors and opportunities which can change the lives of Welsh learners.

“The Transforming Lives campaign shows the positive impact higher education has had on people’s lives, shines a light on what Welsh universities can offer and the different routes and opportunities available for learners.  I hope this campaign inspires other Welsh learners to make higher education their next step.

Hefin David MS, sponsor of today’s event said:

"As Chair of the Senedd Cross-Party Group on Universities, I am delighted to sponsor this event at the Pierhead.

“As a former university lecturer myself, I have seen first-hand how the higher education experience can change an individual’s life for the better, especially if they arrive at it from a non-traditional background.

“Universities Wales’ Transforming Lives campaign is a fantastic initiative that provides real-life examples of the transformative power of higher education.”

Professor Paul Boyle, Chair of Universities Wales, said:

“This collection, which forms part of our Transforming Lives campaign, illustrates the profound and often transformative impact of a university education, both for individuals and for the communities to which they return.

"At a time when Wales faces significant participation challenges—especially among those from disadvantaged backgrounds—it is essential that we continue to highlight the life-changing potential that going to university can offer.

"This campaign is a testament to the resilience, dedication, and passion of those who pursue higher education, and to the power of our universities as catalysts for positive change in society.”

The Transforming Lives campaign comes at a critical time, as Wales grapples with declining higher education participation rates. By shining a spotlight on the incredible journeys of Welsh learners, Universities Wales hopes to inspire future generations to pursue higher education and take advantage of life-changing opportunities on offer.
