Professor Evans takes over from Professor Paul Boyle, Vice-Chancellor of Swansea University, who has held the role since 2023.

Professor Evans said:

“I am delighted to have been elected as Chair of Universities Wales. This is undoubtedly a challenging time for the sector but there is a great deal to be positive about, including increasing student satisfaction across Wales, the rapid rise in student start-ups, and the recent research that shows the significant impact our universities have on Wales’ economy.

“With the Senedd elections next year, this is a particularly exciting time to step into the role of Chair. Higher Education is a significant driver of opportunity and social mobility, and I look forward to working with colleagues to ensure that our universities continue to be among Wales’ greatest assets, now and for generations to come.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Paul Boyle for his work as Universities Wales Chair since 2023. I am sure I speak for all my colleagues in Wales in saying that his thoughtful leadership, his supportive and collaborative approach, and his extensive experience have been greatly valued.”

Amanda Wilkinson, Universities Wales Director, added:

“This is a pivotal moment for universities in Wales as we continue to adapt to a new tertiary education system, grapple with the challenges facing the sector, and gear up for Senedd elections next year.

“I’m confident that Professor Evans’ experience, expertise and strong leadership will enable us to seize the opportunities ahead of us.  I look forward to working with her to deliver on our mission to support a university system that transforms lives and brings benefits to people and communities across the whole of Wales”.
