Universities Wales response to announcement that Mark Drakeford MS will step down as First Minister
In response to Mark Drakeford MS announcing he will step down as First Minister, Professor Elizabeth Treasure, Chair of Universities Wales, said:
13 December 2023
‘I would like to thank Mark Drakeford MS for his contribution to higher education over many years.
‘During his time as First Minister, Welsh universities worked closely with Welsh Government to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on our students, staff and institutions. This saw Wales have the highest levels of support for higher education in the UK.
‘This partnership working also led to a protocol for returning to campuses, agreed by universities, unions and Welsh Government, which enabled Wales to have the greatest volume of in-person delivery in the UK with a focus on the well-being and attainment of students. This collaborative approach demonstrated the tangible and beneficial impact that social partnership can have.
‘The First Minister’s support for social partnership, the Welsh language and culture, and Wales’ place on the international stage has also helped universities strengthen their role as anchors in place and building global connections. At the same time, the personal qualities and values that Mark brought to the role – with a focus on collaboration, respect and partnership – shaped our ways of working for the better.
'Whilst he has maintained the highest professional standards at all times, Mark’s warm personality and sense of humour have always shone through and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him over many years. I wish him the very best for the future.'
