Here is Michael's story:

"After graduating with BSc (Hons) in Biology, I started working as a science technician in a school. Seeing all of my colleagues teaching confirmed that that's what I wanted to do as a career and I decided to study for my PGCE qualification.

The Open University course allowed me the flexibility to continue to earn a salary while studying, and I stayed at my current school where – after graduating – I was lucky enough to secure a permanent teaching position.

The most valuable part of going to university has been the opportunity to develop and challenge myself. During my PGCE course I was invited to speak with the education minister at the time, Kirsty Williams, during an online audience, I took part in the inspection of the course with ESTYN, and recorded videos for the open evening. These were all great experiences that I would not have had otherwise.

My life's been completely changed as a result of attending university. I would not have my current position without both of my university qualifications and I'm now doing a job that I really love. I've also developed substantially as a person. I'm confident that I can rise to the challenge because of all I've done during my time at university.

A lot of people might think that university isn't for them because of their personal circumstances; perhaps they haven't the time to complete a university qualification, can't afford to take the time away from work, or think that there isn't a course that suits them. With some research, most everyone will be able to find a course which fits around them and their life, and one that will really make a difference to them."
